Oyinkan Braithwaite’s “Treasure”

In Treasure, a new short story from Oyinkan Braithwaite, the author of My Sister The Serial Killer, Treasure is an aspiring Instagram influencer in Lagos, on her way to blue-check, swipe-up stardom, with carefully posed lifestyle shots and cleverly written captions. Maybe her IG is a bit more beautiful than her real life, but isn’t that true of all our social media?

I love stories that explore the space between social media perfection and everyday life (a theme found in like Followers, Big Summer, Happy and You Know It, just to name a few), and the Lagos setting added a new dimension.  This short story has the same clever attention to class and presentation and the same dark humor that made My Sister The Serial Killer great.

Treasure is free to read on Kindle as part of the Hush short story collection. Hush also includes Snowflakes, a dark short story from Ruth Ware.
