The Biggest Industries in the State of Indiana

If you are considering a move, it is always a good idea to look into the job market in the areas you are exploring. Having a handle on the top industries in the city or region can make your job search easier once you plan a location to move to.

If you have narrowed your search down to the state of Indiana, there are several fine cities you can choose from to make your new home. As you decide on which city, consider the job opportunities available based on the top industries in the state, which are:

Manufacturing

A significant percentage of Indiana’s economy is based on manufacturing. The main products manufactured in Indiana and exported include automobiles and auto parts, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and industrial and electric machinery. While the recent historical decline in manufacturing has greatly impacted many cities in the US (such as the Rust Belt cities), Indiana has been mostly unaffected, mainly due to the highly skilled labor required to manufacture products such as industrial machinery and that is already available in Indiana.

In this case, companies have been willing to move to Indiana to take advantage of highly skilled labor and the affordability of not being in a large metropolitan area. If you have expertise in manufacturing and are looking to live in a more affordable area, there are plenty of Indianapolis houses for sale.

Agriculture

Indiana is located in both the “Corn Belt” and the “Grain Belt” of the United States. While there are less acres currently being farmed than previously, advances in agricultural technology have helped to increase outputs in Indiana. Top crops in Indiana include soybeans, corn, and mint. Indiana is also known for tomatoes, melon, dairy, eggs, and hog products.

If you have experience in the agricultural industry and are interested in an area that is looking towards the future of farming, consider Indiana.

Transportation

The state motto of Indiana is “The Crossroads of America.” Indiana earned this motto based on its history of being a railroad hub. Indiana also has 13 major US highways that pass through it, making it a regional hub for distribution, trucking, and warehousing. If that is not enough, the state also has several major airports, as well as a robust shipping industry via water.

Each of these transportation methods needs to employ many people in many different types of jobs. From warehouse managers to truck drivers to pilots to mechanics to the technology managers who keep all the systems running, there are so many jobs associated with and related to transportation. If you have any experience in transportation directly or in any of the adjacent fields that could aid in the transportation field, you will have no problem finding a job if you plan to move to Indiana.

Indiana has a very diverse economy, and there are certainly more industries thriving in the Hoosier State. However, the main industries making up Indiana’s economy include manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation.
